Home insurance is one of the most important purchases that we as home owners have to make.When it comes to home insurance, don’t scrimp. You have invested too much in your property to consider going for insurance cover that is cheap but does not provide enough cover. There are a huge number of home insurance companies available to choose from. It is wise to compare not only the cost of the insurance but the cover that it gives you.

Firstly decide what cover you want, it is always advisable to get cover that will allow for the total rebuilding of your home should the worst case scenario occur. If you are not sure of the value of your property for home insurance purposes, then it may be advisable to get an up to date valuation including rebuilding costs. Don’t want to spend the money on a valuation – then look around your neighbourhood to see if there are properties similar to yours for sale and see how much they are selling for.

Before getting a home insurance quote check with your friends and neighbours to see who they are using and if they have had good or bad experience using their home insurance company.

Always get at least 3 quotes for you home insurance and then compare the small print. I know, it is small print and very few of us like to take the time to read it, however 10 or 15 minutes checking the fine print could save a lot of heartache later.

Compare simple things such as will they pay for alternative accommodation if yours is uninhabitable, face it if you are having to rent somewhere it will probably cost more than you were paying for your home loan, and very importantly check what is NOT covered in your home insurance policy, that can sometimes be more revealing than checking what is covered

Make sure that your home insurance cover has the ability to rise each year to cover the cost of inflation and any property price increases. You also need to have the ability to freeze the increases on your home insurance policy during the time that property prices go down not something we like to think of but it does happen.

Does the home insurance company offer you a discount if you have a security system, dead bolts or have other policies with them?

If you work from home check that there are no get out clauses for the home insurance company, what may not seem important to you such as using chemicals in you home business may invalidate your home insurance.

If you have had your home insurance for a year or two then it would be wise to check around as you can make significant savings by shopping around.

There are many things involved in being a home owner and home insurance is right there at the top. Buying a home is the single largest purchase most of us ever make, so it pays to take the time to get it right.
